I’ve been collecting little things like this in anticipation of doing a big mental health awareness photo project. Yesterday, on the advice of all the wise people in my life saying “just do a small something with your phone” to chip away at the creative block, I did precisely that.

A year ago, I built a 6-foot Easter basket and turned myself into a giant Peep, a redo of a concept I originally shot in 2009 that I’d promised myself I would do bigger and better when I had the time, space, and resources. It was our fourth big shoot of 2023, and we felt good about where the year was headed.

We did another shoot 3 weeks later, and haven’t been back in the studio since. I haven’t even edited the photos from that last shoot yet. Part of me fears that will have been the last shoot we ever do. Irrational, highly unlikely, but a fear I have nonetheless.

Right now, I’m having difficulty imagining being back in the studio. All I’ve written this year is the beginnings of a few poems. I haven’t done a self portrait in almost 2 months.

This will change. I’ve had dry spells before but creating is a big enough part of who I am that I know I’ll get back to it.

But this is about the biggest baddest bleakest dry spell I’ve ever been through, and it’s tough when you’re still in it.

So it looks like my little man has thyroid cancer

Not 100% confirmed yet but based on his labs there are few other things it could be. He’s not suffering right now, nor will he. He’s a 15+ year old dog with a heart condition, so no aggressive quality-of-life-compromising measures will be taken.

He will be kept comfortable. He will know he is loved. And when the time comes, he will be let go as peacefully as possible ❤️

This is my #selfportraitsunday do-over because yesterday found me in bed with the worst migraine I’ve had in years but Sunday was less than 12 hours ago so I’m calling my streak still alive 🖤
